Fostering Thriving Communities

SHARING THE VALUE WE CREATE

The projects we develop actively contribute to the development and quality of life of the communities. They bring water, provide sanitation, generate energy and create roads. They support economic and social development. They help build a world where “no person or place is left behind”, as envisaged in the EU Green Deal.

However, we are aware of the potential negative environmental and social impacts that the implementation of our projects can have on local communities.

This is the reason behind the sustainability axis “Promoting Thriving Communities”, which contributes to two key SDGs:

SDG 8: Promote inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all.

SDG 11: Make cities and communities inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.

In line with our Sustainability Policy, the actions we implement are mainly focused on material topics: Access to essential infrastructure, Access to basic needs and education, and Local Contracting.

COMO CRIAMOS VALOR

HOW WE CREATE VALUE

  • The MCA Group aims to protect the long-term value of stakeholders by promoting the sustainable development of the communities in which it operates and mitigating the negative impacts of its activity.

We believe that the creation of shared and lasting value is achieved through the involvement of stakeholders throughout the value chain.

And it is precisely with a focus on the sustainability of our operations that we seek to create value not only for this generation, but for generations to come, which is expressed in our purpose: Empowering Lives for Generations.

Local Hiring

ACT GLOBAL, ACT LOCAL: WE PROMOTE LOCAL HIRING

Our workforce is mostly made up of locals, familiar with the market. This action has an impact especially in developing countries, where unemployment can be significant. In this way, we contribute to the reduction of unemployment rates and the development of local communities.

We occasionally resort to employee expatriation (4% in 2022) to fill gaps in the market, ensure common procedures and corporate culture and provide different career paths to our employees.

ACCESS TO CRITICAL INFRASTRUCTURE

We believe it is critical to have open communication with governments and the communities where our operations are located, to honor the right of communities to be heard before any project.

By building roads, we connect people, shorten distances, and facilitate the expansion of public transportation. Renewable energy projects provide access to clean energy and support the local economy. Access to clean water and urban sanitation has the potential to save lives.

The MCA Group continues to implement infrastructure and solar photovoltaic energy projects – especially in Angola and Portugal – that contribute to the development of local communities.

Initiative
SUN FOR ALL IN ANGOLA – 2022-2023

We have electrified the road that connects the centre of Baía Farta to the city’s new hospital, allowing people to move safely at night from their homes to the facilities (2.8 km away from the city). Objective: to reduce crime and provide a better quality of life for the residents of Baía Farta. +1,000 people/week benefit from this initiative.

Acesso a Necessidades Básicas e Educação

ACCESS TO BASIC NEEDS AND EDUCATION

One of the pillars on which our business strategy is based is the promotion of sustainable development in the geographies where we are present and in the communities with which we interact. Our work would be incomplete if we did not prioritize access to basic necessities and education, which are basic pillars for the development of any community. We are focused on developing and implementing social responsibility initiatives in line with the needs and expectations addressed to us.
